Sam McVey, Professional Boxer, born in Oxnard : May 17, 1884 ; McVey entered the professional ring at the age of eighteen and fought at least seven fights, six of them in Oxnard, before meeting Jack Johnson in his first officially recorded heavyweight bout on February 27, 1903. McVey fought professionally in the U.S., France, England, Australia, Cuba, Argentina, Chile and Panama until 1920 and died on December 23, 1921 at age 37.
