Both were built to Hancock's specifications, and employed in oceanographic research in the Pacific. During World War II, Velero III was used as a patrol vessel by the U.S. Navy. After the war, it was purchased by the American Independent Oil Company and converted into a luxury cruiser for the Sheik of Kuwait.
